The origins of phyti weaving are lost in the ages. It has evolved through time, having undergone changes brought about by the history of the island. Geometric patterns similar to motifs used in phyti weaving were used since ancient times as can be seen from pottery of the Geometric period.
Weaving was well developed during Byzantine times and during the Venetian and Lusignian dynasty. In those days Cypriot valuable silk and woolen fabrics were renowned for their high quality and were exported in great quantities to Europe.

Phyti weaving is the most important type of Cypriot weaving. Its name derives from Phyti village which seems to have played an important part in its development. The main features of phyti weaving are the colorful, geometric textured designs or «ploumia», as they are called by the weavers, which are made on natural colored cotton cloth.
The «ploumia» mainly have strong primary colors: blue, red, green, orange and yellow; they are made while weaving by using thick colored threads or «fytilia» which are placed by the weaver among the warp threads.
Phyti weaving was mostly made in rectangular napkins, bed-covers and table-cloths. The most dominant shape of the designs is the rhomb which is made parallel to the narrow sides of the fabric. The designs usually come from items used in everyday life such as the «black-eye», the «design of the teacher's shoe» and the «carpet design». These wide designs are separated by parallel rows of narrow designs such as the "little arch» and the «fish-bone» design. Towards the centre of the napkins, linear, separate designs are formed such as the «palm-trees» and the «litf1e women". In the centre a symbolic richly decorated cross was formed, often covering the whole central area of the napkin. The edges of the fabric were adorned by coloured tassels or by added crochet lace.
Phyti weaving was mainly made in Phyti village and neighbouring villages as well as in other areas of the Paphos district. Phyti weaving was also made in the Karpass Peninsula, along the lower side of the female pantaloons, characteristic of the local traditional costume. These designs were very dense and were called «pefkota» which meant «carpet like".
Today phyti weaving is made in a limited scale in the Paphos area, and mainly in Phyti village. It is also made by a number of women trained by the Cyprus Handicraft Service which was established after the Turkish invasion.
The basic targets of the Cyprus Handicraft Service is the study, preservation and promotion of traditional handicrafts. So, new functional articles were created, based on authentic traditional ones, thus creating new employment opportunities for local weavers and refugee women coming from the northern occupied areas.
Phyti weaving was part of the dowry of young girls which was necessary for their marriage and future life. At the same time it formed a means of expressing their talent and craftsmanship.
